Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain Veneers

If you’re unhappy with the appearance of your smile and you don’t have any major structural concerns, then porcelain veneers might be the perfect option for you! With porcelain veneers, you can improve the look, shape, size, and color of your teeth with this painless, non-invasive cosmetic dentistry process.

What Are Porcelain Veneers?

Porcelain veneers are thin, shell-like porcelain structures that are designed to cover cosmetic imperfections and discolorations on the surface of patient’s teeth, while leaving the underlying tooth intact. They are as thin as a piece of a broken light bulb and are permanently bonded to the tooth surface increasing its strength and becoming an integral part of it.

What Problems Can Porcelain Veneers Address?

Porcelain veneers improve the appearance of teeth by covering stains, repairing structural damage, chips, cracks and wear. They can also change the shape, width and length of teeth, in addition to masking small gaps and misalignments.
Porcelain veneers simply cover cosmetic problems on teeth. They cannot achieve major teeth realignment, fix malocclusion, or strengthen the structure of a compromised tooth. For patients with extensive damage, partial or full coverage crowns might be a better option.

What to Expect When Getting Dental Veneers from Our Top-Rated Orange County Dentists

Consultation

During your initial consultation appointment, Dr, Fotinos or Dr Rosales will discuss your concerns and goals and then help you determine whether porcelain veneers are the best treatment option for you.

Preparing Teeth for Veneers by Digitally Scanning Your Mouth

The process of getting veneers begins with an appointment for digitally scanning your teeth which creates a 3D model that is sent to the dental lab to use as a preparation guide to fabricate your porcelain veneers.
Dr Fotinos or Dr Rosales will select the perfect shape, size, and color of porcelain veneers with your input. The dental lab receives this information and produces a diagnostic wax up, which basically is a wax model of what your veneers will look like when completed in porcelain. This wax up is reviewed with you for any changes and then used as a guide in fabricating your temporary and final restorations.

In order for porcelain veneers to form a secure bond with teeth and result in a comfortable fit, a very thin layer of enamel (about 0.5 mm) will be removed from the surface of the teeth. A second digital scan is completed to capture the prepared teeth and sent to the dental lab. Before the patient leaves our office, we’ll fit them with a set of beautiful temporary veneers created from the diagnostic wax up to act as a trial run of the final restorations and to protect the teeth and guide the gum tissue into position, while awaiting lab fabrication and placement of the permanent veneers.

Dental Veneer Application

Once we receive the patient’s permanent porcelain veneers from the lab, we’ll schedule a third appointment for application. During this appointment, we try in the veneers and get your approval for permanent cementation. Next, the patient’s teeth will be cleaned and polished and we will apply an antibacterial desensitizer, etchant and adhesive to the tooth surface, which improves the bonding between the enamel and the veneer. The porcelain veneers are then bonded to the teeth with an agent in a color chosen to blend naturally with the surrounding dentition.
